My Kids Amaze Me!

This post is one that I wrote over at the Everyday Christian Moms Network to go with our weekly blog theme, "My kid's Amaze Me."

We would love to have you come on over to the network to participate. We welcome, previously published posts from your personal blog, as well as links your blog.

My kids continue to amaze me by teaching me something new almost daily. I firmly believe that children are God's way of revealing Himself to us. The joy of parenthood lets us experience a piece the love that God feels for us as His children.

To illustrate how my kids "teach" me, I will share a story that actually happened this Sunday.

We were on our way home from church (I had my 9 year old daughter and four year old daughter in the car with me) and the road that I usually go home on (a highway) was blocked off. They did not do a very good job of providing detour signs. Now, anybody who knows me understands that I can get lost in a paper bag! Turn me around once and I am helpless! With us being new to the New Orleans area, I had no idea how to get home. So of course I did what any sane person would do, I went around and around in circles (each time ending in a spot that was back BEFORE the road blockage, even though I thought I had passed it). Every time we came back to the blockage I would exclaim, "What? how did we get back here? Dagblasted, dogone it!" (Like most moms, I used made up curses to avoid using bad language in front of my kids)

Finally after coming back to the road block 3 times, my nine year old looked at me and said, "Mom why don't you just pray about it and we will get home. Your way of handling it doesn't seem to be working."

I just looked at her and wondered two things. Why was she being so cheeky? and Why I hadn't thought of that before? Then my emotion turned to being amazed that she had said something so profound. So there we were in the car, saying a prayer together for God to get us home. Sooooo... I think you can guess what happened next. Almost immediately, I recognized a landmark and we made our way past the roadblock and back onto the highway. As we got onto the highway we all yelled. "Yay!" (you have to remember we had been driving around for an hour so this was a big deal)

A little bit down the road, I hear a little voice from the back of the car say, "Thank you, God!" It was my four year-old Lilly. Deborah and I joined in the thanksgiving for the miracle that God had performed on our behalf (again, if you know me, you know that it was a miracle that we found our way!)

So, that is my story about "how my kids amaze me". They amaze me by loving God with an innocence that seems to get all mixed up for us as adults. I thank the Lord for sending these precious ones into my life! He reveals His love to me through them on a daily basis!

Matthew 18:2-4 (New International Version)

2He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Encouragement for Mom!

Well, I have been so busy lately and have been feeling a bit overwhelmed to be honest. Somehow, God led me to hear this song for the first time (One heartbeat at a time by Stephen Curtis Chapman). I am sure that it may not be new to some of you as it was meant for mother's day, but I wanted to share this song and photomontage with all the moms that have dedicated their lives to the raising of Godly kids. Thanks to jesuskvinne on youtube for creating the photomontage! I hope it speaks to your heart like it spoke to mine.

Have a Decision to Make? Follow HIS lead!

As moms, we are always making decisions. We may be facing decisions on small details or major decisions that will change the course of our lives. The outcomes of some of our decisions affect not only our lives but the lives of our whole families! Will we stay home, will we go to work? What will we teach our children? How will we interact with our husbands? Will we volunteer for this event or that one? How will we run our business? Will we live here or there? The list of decisions goes on and on! If you have ever felt perplexed or burdened about decisions, big or small, don't be fearful. As children of God we have the best example to follow when it comes to those decisions that we are asked to make. When God came to earth in the form of His Son, Jesus, He not only died for our sins but left the best example on how to live a Godly and holy life.

Consider one of the most important decisions Jesus had to make, the selection of his twelve apostles. He knew that he only had a short time on this earth and that the men that he chose to be apostles must be men after the heart of God Himself. They needed to be strong, caring, righteous and more. This was a very important decision indeed!

In Luke 6:12-13 we read:
One of those days Jesus went out to the mountainside to pray, and spent all night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them who he also designated as apostles.

As God sent to earth in the flesh, Jesus went to the Father in prayer. He took time away from the hustle and bustle of teaching and healing to go out to the mountainside. It was just him and the Father above! Not only did he pray for guidance, he prayed all night long! If the Lord himself felt that prayer was the only way, shouldn't we also?

Are you facing some tough decisions in your life today? Don't feel overwhelmed, God will show the way. Take this perfect example from Jesus and spend some quiet time with God-just you and HIM. He will give you the wisdom and guidance that you so desperately need if you seek His face and listen for His answer.

Happy New Year!

Hello to all and Happy New Year! I pray that you had a wonderful holiday season and are having an even better 2009.

As he new year is now upon us, many of us are reflecting on goals, aspirations and New Year's resolutions. We may be tempted to focus on fitness, business, personal, or financial goals during this time. I know I certainly am! (especially with those 20 lbs I want to lose) Though all of those goals are an important part of our lives, the Lord constantly encourages us to put Him and spiritual goals first. Ask Him about how you can be the mom, wife, sister, niece and friend that the Lord calls you to be. Through prayer and the study of the word, we can all find the balance and peace that He wants us to have as we embark upon all that we are called to do. What spiritual goals will you set for yourself this year? Write them down in a journal or somewhere you visit often. Share your goals with a close friend, family member or prayer partner so that you can ask each other about them once in a while. Focusing on the spiritual first will allow everything else to fall into place, making for a happier and more fulfilled 2009!

May the Lord lead your hearts into God's love and Christ's patience.
